ALISON GOLDFRAPP
The Love Invention (Skint/BMG)
The Love Invention is Alison Goldfrapp’s first solo album under her full name, following seven albums as Goldfrapp with multi-instrumentalist and producer Will Gregory. The album’s seeds were planted during the pandemic when Alison started working on tracks in the solitude of her newly built home studio, keen to move in a more euphoric disco/club direction than before.
Credited as ‘executive producer’ of the finished article, Goldfrapp also involved Róisín Murphy producer Richard X and Daniel Avery collaborator James Greenwood in the shaping of The Love Invention. Fans of her previous albums like Black Cherry or Supernature won’t be disappointed with the results, with Goldfrapp’s vocals on point throughout – but, in contrast to her work with Gregory, it seems to be ripe for being cranked up loud in a jam-packed railway arch rave at midnight through a humongous sound system.
From album opener NeverStop via Fever to final track SloFlo, The Love Invention as a whole is a melodic, supercharged electro-funk belter – with a production vibe somewhere between Giorgio Moroder and Chris Blackwell’s fabled Compass Point studio.
