SEA POWER
Everything Was Forever (Golden Chariot)
Now devoid of their ‘British’ prefix, due to its connotations, Sea Power get back down to core business on new album, Everything Was Forever. Always a band a little out of step with the times by being a fairly traditionalist indie rock outfit, this release has a 00s feel to it while reflecting recent upheaval through anthemic choruses.
Scaring At The Sky and We Only Want To Make You Happy bookend Everything Was Forever, with breathy vocals, chiming guitars and electronic cloud cover creating a hazy, shoegazey vibe. The more meat-and-two-veg end of their sound is in evidence on the synthetic New Order rock of Doppelganger, while Transmitter sounds a bit like the U2 that they left behind.
Difficult to keep a good chorus and melody down though, with Folly delivering a decent indie disco number and the powerful Two Fingers appearing to stick it to the fops in charge: “Two fingers for the dead, two fingers for the living, two fingers for the world that we are living.” Which deserves a clap for the uncarers.
