Sin City, Swansea
Tue 5 Dec
Pulled apart by horses: a gruesome means of torture and dismemberment that can’t have been a barrel of laughs. Pulled Apart By Horses: a riotous quartet who bring a great deal more pleasure than pain, but do still leave you feeling bruised and brutalised (albeit just about in one piece).
Formed back in 2008, and hence arguably godfathers of the incredibly fertile Leeds scene, Pulled Apart By Horses quickly made a name for themselves with crazed live shows, performing as though on day release from an underground bunker where they were kept alive on a steady diet of Skittles and speed. Vocalist/guitarist Tom Hudson would rampage around the crowd, hospitalising himself with a bloody head injury at one infamous early gig, while mushroom-haired guitarist James Brown (not that one) spent much of his time perched atop speaker stacks.
In those terms, it’s a wonder that they’ve made it to 2017, and a fourth LP, of which Hudson has said, “Basically we wanted to go with our guts and fuck everyone else.” The Haze takes their punk metal and turns up the melody and grungy tunefulness while turning down the Jesus Lizardy eccentricities. The album came out in March, well before the current tour, which goes to show that playing live is an itch they just have to scratch. And you, lucky people of Swansea, get to see them do it.
