Zabrinski
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff

Alternative rock is such a broad description as to hardly be accurate to describe any band these days, but if all the subgenres that fall under that particular umbrella could be used to describe one band, then that band would be Zabrinski. In the late 90s, when the Welsh rock scene was riding high and topping the UK charts, there was another crop of youngsters preparing their own assault. The Carmarthen-based Zabrinski would go on to move to Cardiff, release four albums and tour with the likes of Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, before splitting in 2007.
Fast forward to early 2018, where a tweet emerges promising new music from the band, shortly followed by news of live performances again: a dry run at October’s Swn festival will be followed by a headline show at Clwb Ifor Bach this month.
Zabrinski’s debut album Screen Memories is perhaps the best example of their versatility. The combination of bilingual lyrics to a backbeat of psychedelic indie and Chemical Brothers-style soundscapes and breakbeats shows a band with no fear of experimenting. The triumphant return of a much-underrated band who declare their Welsh pride in their music, at the home of Welsh music. You really don’t want to miss that now, do you?
