YOUNG KATO | LIVE REVIEW
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, Wed 23 Apr
You would be forgiven for never having heard of Young Kato. This indie-pop band from Cheltenham have only been around since 2011, but have already supported Bastille, We Are Scientists, Spector and Peace in their short history, as well as appearing on reality television show Made In Chelsea last year.
The show began with Pixel Fix, an Oxford band playing indie tunes with a hint of r’n’b. Unfortunately for the boys the crowd was small and appeared to pay them little attention. Perhaps a more mature audience may have given Pixel Fix a warmer reception. Nevertheless they gave Young Kato a good introduction and the headliners hit the stage with bags of energy.
Quickly expressing their love of “shouting and making noise”, YK seemed eager to create a buzz in the audience. Lead vocalist Tommy Wright sang Revolution with enthusiasm and everybody bopped along accordingly. The sound went from light indie to sickly sweet as they played Waiting for A Star To Fall (originally performed by Boy Meets Girl), a song they covered for their appearance on Made In Chelsea. A couple of slow songs lost the attention of the crowd, but Drink, Dance, Play managed to win them over again as Wright convinced them to shout along with him.
As likeable and energetic as the boys were, it seemed as though their energy was somewhat wasted on the crowd, who remained quite still for the majority of the show. Their efforts might be more appreciated at a music festival with an enthusiastic audience rather than the shy crowd that turned out at Clwb Ifor Bach. Still, for a relatively unknown band yet to release a debut album they are doing pretty well for themselves.
