The Women Of Llanrumney
May 16 @ 19:30 - June 1 @ 22:30
£6.00The Llanrumney of the title is not the suburb of Cardiff, rather the Llanrumney sugar plantation in the Saint Mary Parish, in Jamaica circa 1765, Accordingly, new play {The Women Of Llanrumney} confronts Wales’ colonial past. The women in question are Annie and daughter Cerys, two enslaved women ‘owned’ (even writing that word in a historical context feels wrong) by the Morgan family. The other woman of Llanrumney is matriarch Elizabeth Morgan, who could lose her plantation; what would this ultimately mean for Annie and Cerys, especially with rebellion in the air? Written by Azuka Oforka, a writer and actor who you may recognise from {Casualty}, {The Women…} is her debut theatre play. Oforka is an alumnus of Sherman Theatre’s Unheard Voices and BBC Writersroom Welsh Voices 2022. On International Women’s Day in March, the Sherman announced that the play would be lead by Welsh actress Suzanne Packer as Annie, and Nia Roberts as Elizabeth in this four-hander. On at 6.30pm on Mon 20, Fri 24 and Fri 31 May; 7pm on Wed 22 May; 2pm on Sat 25 May; Thurs 30 May and Sat 1 June. No performances on Sun 19, Sun 26 or Mon 27 June. Tickets: £6-£20. words CHRIS WILLIAMS
