THREADS
Cynon Valley Gallery, Aberdare
Until Sat 2 June
Diana Brockway’s patchwork and quilt work comes to the Cynon Valley Museum And Gallery this month in a collection celebrating a number of themes and categories; art and artists, abstract interpretations, architecture, landscapes, landforms (inspired by her travels), and challenges and themes such as flowers and nature. The quilts maintain frequent threads of technique, style and inspiration, and again connections can be found between the different themes.
As one of Wales’ award winning contemporary quilt-makers, Diana Brockway’s textile work has been exhibited around the world. Since retiring in 1987 after 25 years of teaching art, Diana tragically found that she had Parkinson’s disease. A severe jolt to her confidence, with many of her plans laid to waste, Diana joined a patchwork and quilting class as a form of therapy, and soon this pastime became a major passion in her life. Diana derives much of her inspiration from her own personal experiences, observations and extensive travelling. One of her sons, Harry, who is a master carver and wood engraved has also proved a great inspiration on her work.
For a contemporary taste of textile art, Diana’s work is certainly a fantastic place to start, with a range of pieces providing excellent inspiration for anyone with a taste for textiles. Admission: free. Info: 01685 886729 / www.cvmg.co.uk (GL)
