Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, every Thurs-Sun until Sun 25 Sept
As the summer quickly comes to an end, one of the only glimpses of hope to enjoy the last of the sun with delicious food and drinks is the Street Food Circus. Moving to a new site in Sophia Gardens, the atmosphere has improved sevenfold from last year. Feeling even more like a festival, you can get lost in the chilled vibes and forget you’re in the city centre of Cardiff.
Taking place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of September, Street Food Circus has 20 rotating food trucks and craft bars that will satisfy everyone’s taste buds. The deceptively big site centres around a big top tent that is surrounded by the street food vans. The vendors that stood out the most when I first arrived onsite were Canton-based wood fire pizzeria Dusty Knuckle, one of the best BBQ joints in the UK The Smokehouse and the spine-tinglingly fascinating Science Cream. There is certainly no shortage of talent on the list; with so many tasty trucks on offer the most difficult part of the Street Food Circus is deciding where to eat.
With a lot of different foods to choose from, I decided on the Tukka Tuk, which is the award winning Indian restaurant Purple Poppadom’s street food stall. Picking the samosa chaat was definitely the right move – one can almost dismiss the samosa as a bland food that you pick up from Tesco when you’re in a rush, but the way that chef Anand George has infused mouthwatering flavours to create something that leaves you groaning in pleasure is amazing.
After that treat, I decided to get a little cheesy and head over to The Cheese Truck for a Somerset Brie and mushroom toastie that can only be described as gooey heaven. To finish the night I decided to get a few drinks with some old friends at The Applecart Cider Bar, and being a self-appointed cider connoisseur I was more than happy with the selection they had on offer.
Street Food Circus is definitely worth checking out, especially when you have a group of friends to chat and eat some delicious food with.
