Seamlessly melding jazz and hip-hop genres, the effervescent saxophonist Soweto Kinch arrives at The Riverfront, Newport, on Sun 2 Jun with an innovative new show combining material from recently released album The Legend Of Mike Smith as well as choreography and dance.
Inspired by the The Seven Deadly Sins and Dante’s Inferno, the performance, which carries the same name as his new album, sees jazz improvisation, a driving hip-hop score, spoken word narrative elements and choreography from breakdancer and British hip-hop stalwart Jonzi D. Through the evening Soweto tells the story of Mike Smith, a young aspiring MC caught in a world of temptation where the boundaries of reality and fantasy collide.
The Birmingham-born MC and saxophonist graduated from Oxford University with a degree in modern history before pursing music full-time, garnering himself a Mercury Music Prize nomination in the process as well as a MOBO for best jazz artist in 2003. Always pioneering and pushing the boundaries of what has gone before, Soweto’s new show is sure to confound and challenge expectation.
