SIGHTSEERS
g39, Cardiff
Until Sat 2 June
When the Venice Art Biennale opens its doors to the public every two years, 300,000 visitors flock to see what is widely regarded as one of the leading international events for the visual arts. Like many nations, a team made up of artists, writers and curators from Wales are sent out to the Wales In Venice exhibition for the duration of the show to supervise, monitor and maintain the exhibition, with Wales’ 2017 offering being James Richards: Music For The Gift. This team also takes the opportunity to develop and research new work in the midst of Venice.
Sightseers, then, is the result of g39 working with the group to display the results of this extended working trip abroad, born out of a unique type of cultural assimilation that takes place when working abroad – where you rapidly transition from wide-eyed, ambling tourist to another local cursing the slow-moving tourists on your daily commute. On display from this month, the exhibition is set in a replica of the group’s shared domestic space in Venice, on the Isle Of Certosa, and each work is allowed to interact with each other to create one overarching experience. It has been curated as an intriguingly eclectic collection of artworks, objects, research, sounds and actions, and showcases what will likely be a selection of early works by Wales’ next generation of prominent artists.
