Turn It On! (Cool Death/Feel It)
Turn It On! is surely a contender for Best Guitar Intros Ever 2022 – if that’s a category in anyone’s annual competition list. Adam Johnson and Fergus Sinclair, the two axemen of Melbourne-born Romero, have frontloaded almost every song on their debut album with riffage of exceptional quality. The only bugbear is that the following songs don’t quite live up to the intros: Alanna Oliver’s voice can sometimes sound thin and the writing lacks the right amount of punch to set the songs on fire.
Notable exceptions are the blistering title track and its follower, Half Way – two songs, leaning more toward the glam side of rock, that show what the band are capable of when everything clicks into place. Definitely a band to see live, but this is an album that shows huge promise – and with Sydney’s The Lazy Eyes’ debut also dropping this month, it looks like this a good time for alternative Australian rock.
