A powerful and moving story, River Sing Me Home is a haunting debut from Eleanor Shearer. Set in 1834, the dramatic story begins with an introduction to Rachel – who has fled her life as a slave on a plantation in Barbados, aiming to find her lost children who have been taken from her over the years. As her journey progresses through British Guiana and Trinidad, the children’s stories are weaved throughout, with each character looking for their own freedom.
Finding inspiration from real-life stories of women who travelled across the Caribbean islands searching for their lost children, it’s apparent that this is a thoroughly researched novel. The wealth of characters provide the emotional thread, offering the right balance to support the historical elements of the narrative.
Reaching the end of the book, I felt that I had been on a journey with the characters, with many pivotal people to tell the story of hope, love, loss and power along the way. An engaging read, with an important insight into past events, but also bringing the emotional elements into play by revisiting so many memories. River Sing Me Home is beautifully written, demonstrating the power of the mind and the human heart.
