An animated film with no dialogue may seem like a tough sell, but this is a charming, beautiful and absorbing fable about the cycle of life. Backed by the animation arthouse Studio Ghibli that brought us the delights of Spirited Away, The Red Turtle follows a castaway on a desert island, as he struggles to survive, finding food, befriending crabs and trying to escape his apparent prison on a self-made raft, only for a red turtle to prevent him doing so. Why is the turtle trying to keep him there? Offering no easy answers and existing in a dream-like state, The Red Turtle offers many interpretations and is not kiddie friendly Disney-esque fare. Instead it is a patient, beguiling tale that will move those willing to embrace it. Truly different and extraordinary and with an emotional, human resonance that lingers.
