The interesting thing about watching an Ockham’s Razor piece is knowing that if any of the performers were to get seriously injured, the whole show would be in trouble. During the post-show talk of The Mill, cast members explained that the size and weight of each person has a direct effect on how the equipment is used, who can go where at what time, who will act as a base/anchor/etc. I suppose that’s what makes me such a fan; it’s just s’damned DANGEROUS.
Not only that; they have a clever name. Taken from the medieval philosopher William of Ockham, it reflects the way the company works: given a choice between two theories, go for the simpler one, keeping the work convincing and easily grasped. For example, the context of a piece is rarely explained beyond the twenty or so words you’re likely to glean from the programme. Audiences get to fill in the gaps and approach it intellectually, as well enjoy the spectacle with the occasional “ooh!” and, indeed, “aah!”
The aerialist company is currently touring a triple bill of previous works: Arc tells the story of three people stranded in close proximity; Every Action… is a look at the consequences of our actions; and Memento Mori is an eyebrow-raising duet about death. Tickets: £8-£12. Info: 029 2063 6464 / www.wmc.org.uk (RB)
