NOFIO
Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Until Sat 26 May
Water has often been one of the most fascinating elements that artists and creatives have used throughout history – painters have visualised its refractions of light, filmmakers have used its reflection, poets have described its touch. A collaborative art exhibition consisting of contemporary artists, Nofio responds to the timeless pastime of swimming. A liberating activity that represents freedom to some if not all, Nofio will provide an interesting commentary, reaction and critique of how various people respond to the water.
Whether it’s nostalgic memories of summer swims, the mythos of mermaids and sea creatures, or the graft of being a fisherman or any kind of water-worker, that we live on an island means most of us in the UK have some sort of memory related to bodies of water. Laying claim to a multitude of different exhibitions and shows across the artistic genres, this artistic response to such a commonplace activity will be intriguing.
There’s the sense of underwater weightlessness expressed in Vivienne Rickman Poole’s photography and video, the textiles and decorative swimming costumes of Becky Knight’s craft, and Deborah Teakle’s abstract, surreal, submersive painting. So, if you’re interested in how we respond to the presence of water, as capable of providing life as it of creating death, this exhibition will no doubt provide an interesting insight for you.
