MUTOID MAN
Mutants (Sargent House)
Listening to any Mutoid Man album, let alone this long-awaited comeback effort by this American trio, is to behold three musicians who are absolutely in tune with each other’s chaos. Mutants is the first album in over six years by this celebrated alt-metal supergroup, and the album title couldn’t be more appropriate – they may just have been put on this earth to elevate heavy music to the next plateau.
Currently operating as a combination of vocalist and guitarist Stephen Brodsky, also of Cave In, drummer Ben Koller from metallic hardcore veterans Converge and bassist Jeff Matz – Mutoid Man’s newest member, on loan from High On Fire – Mutants’ riffs are chaotic and its drum patterns are wild. But the band manage to lock it all down with tons of swagger and punk rock fire – a return which will see them rightly revered as one of the best doing it right now.
