The Riverfront, Newport
Sat 14 Apr
Mother’s Ruin is a lively cabaret that explores the history of gin through storytelling and music. It’s a tale about love and women but mainly, it’s about gin and the secrets that come with it. An evening surrounding this cabaret will have you in hysterics as they take you through 18th century London, a few moments in New York, and across the world to the Australian bush and the jungles of Peru.
Mother’s Ruin features two of Australia’s rising cabaret stars, Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood, who recreate well known music by artists such as Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. It’s directed by Anthea Williams and has been touring to full houses, with sold-out seasons at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the London Underbelly Festival, Sydney Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Melbourne Cabaret Festival, among others. This hour-long theatre production allows you to experience a range of emotion as the narrative transitions between high and low moments and brings in a factual based history of the liquor. The mood is kept light through the presence of sailors and barmaids and access to a full bar, naturally stocked with quality gin.
This “rare gem of cabaret gold” is coming to Riverfront for one night only. If heaving harmonies and tipsy candour is your scene, be sure to pick up your tickets to this equally historical and hysterical, extremely popular cabaret show.
