Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen
Sat 19 Mar-Sat 21 May
Enter the world of Cecile Johnson Soliz as she exhibits her dimensional works at Oriel Myrddin this Spring. From sculptures to sketches, and all things ambiguous and wondrous, this exhibition uncovers an assortment of eccentric artwork encouraging viewers to wonder and question what they see.
A woman of the world, Cecile was born in Germany, grew up in the San Joaquin Valley in California and has since lived all over the globe in places including Mexico, Ghana, Brazil and Italy. She now lives in Cardiff and works in her studio in the city centre where she incorporates her life experiences and travels into her artwork.
Made Up displays some of her weird and wonderful creations made using a combination of various mediums. Her interest is in visually recording human interactivity and exploring the complexity of human gestures and actions. However her most recent work reveals the concepts of relationships, not only between two human beings but also between materials, places and time.
She often shares tips and techniques in her workshops and exhibitions, teaching audiences about wrapping, knotting, folding, to-ing and fro-ing, crisscrossing, and winding – all of which are processes that can be extended to sculptural art, painting and drawing. Soliz puts it simply “sometimes you think you know what you are looking at but then aren’t sure, and then another possibility comes into your head… and another. I like the ambiguity of things.”
