LORDI
Screem Writers Guild (Atomic Fire)
Founder member of the Finnish rock band, Mr Lordi himself, comes from a theatrical background, so it’s no surprise that Screem Writers Guild, the ex-Eurovision winners’ 12th album, is a musical score looking for a script. The album’s concept is a fictional awards show – it’s not quite Rocky Horror but it’s amusing and crazily catchy, with some pretty good guitaring.
There are vampires, werewolves and stitched-together bodies; Mr Lordi sounds like Bobby Pickett and you almost expect him to burst into a rendition of the Monster Mash. This is rather a long album, whose many songs are often eerily similar, and you’d be forgiven for giving up around track 10 – but it’s worth persevering until the end to find out who won and who died.
Bride is the theatre’s obligatory love song, End Credits is a tearjerker, and opening track Dead Again Jayne deserves to become a classic. Close your eyes and Screem Writers Guild is a good ol’ romp in a dark auditorium with plenty of blood.
