The Globe, Cardiff
Tue 14 June
Judy Collins sure does hobnob with some big names from the folk music scene. Take Leonard Cohen for example. Before he decided to follow his true calling as a Buddhist monk (!), Judy Collins was the first person Leonard Cohen turned to for help in getting his music heard. Suzanne? Yup, she recorded that first. Bob Dylan’s Mr Tambourine Man? Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now? Judy’s got her own versions, and mighty popular they are too. Judy is a folk star in her own right though. With a career spanning more than 50 years, she not only interprets fellow artists’ words and traditional folk songs, but has penned an extensive collection of lyrics herself. Born in Seattle, Washington, she began as a child prodigy at classical piano, under the tutelage of famed pianist and composer Antonia Brico. It was the lyrics of folk artists Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger that sparked her move from piano to guitar, from classical to folk. Her famous interpretations of classics like Amazing Grace plus the popularity of her own songs has kept her on the folk scene ever since. Her latest gig, in the ambient setting of The Globe, looks set to be a glorious mesh of the finest folk tunes, performed with her customary style.
