HOW NOT TO MAKE IT IN THE POP WORLD (DIARY OF AN ALMOST HAS-BEEN) | BOOK REVIEW
John Barrow (Trafford Publishing)
The musician John Barrow initially published his book, How NOT To Make It In The Pop World (Diary Of An Almost Has-Been, a few years ago. It has since proved so popular, its third, updated edition was released this year.
Reading it, it’s easy to see why it’s gained the popularity it has. Whilst the short chapters and constant use of exclamation points isn’t exactly Shakespearean, the simplistic style and tone becomes a strength of the book. You feel as though you’re sitting down to read a long email from a friend, catching you up on their life. In fact, it becomes incredibly easy to finish this book in a single sitting.
Despite Barrow never being successful enough for a Wikipedia entry of his own, there’s no denying he’s experienced some truly incredible moments of music history. Although it can sometimes be difficult to trawl through the lists of musicians and bands that Barrow has played with, anyone with even a passing interest in pop music’s history should give this a chance, it has some very fun stories to tell.
