Oriel Davies, Newtown
Until Wed 27 Jan
It’s been a long, tiring shift and the boss has been on your back all day. You’ve powered through a menacing workload and you happen to spot the time. There’s a minute left until clock out and you glance out of the window. People are wrapped up in thick coats, powerwalking through the rain – many of us would want to kick our feet up, warm up and relax, right? And what better place is there to do it than home. January 2016 will see six artists showcasing their work and explore the theme of home at Oriel Davies.
We have all walked through that neighbourhood or seen it in the films: the neighbours who are suspiciously too friendly, the houses are too pristine to be anymore than a few weeks old and the talk of the town is how old Bernadette’s cat has gone missing. It’s supposed to make us think of comfort and security. Conversely, picture a derelict house riddled with graffiti and exposed smashed windows; it brings the feelings of vulnerability and discomfort.
Through a combination of installations, paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints, six artists (Frances Carlile, Ainsley Hillard, Jeanette Orrell, Charlotte Squire, Amy Sterly and Felicity Warbrick) delve into the meaning of home. So if you fancy getting out of the house for the day and viewing some thought-provoking art, get down to Oriel Davies.
