FOALS

Life Is Yours (Warner)

With predecessor Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost earning Foals two firsts – a UK number one album and a Brit award – plus a Mercury Prize nomination, the pressure was on for the Oxford band’s eagerly-anticipated seventh album. Thankfully, Life Is Yours is potentially the trio’s best offering to date.

RELATED: ‘Chepstow alt-pop musician Hannah Berney has found success as a songwriter to stars including Mabel and Diana Ross – now, as Violet Skies, she’s launching her debut album this month in Cardiff.’

Right from the lively opening beat and funky percussion of the album’s title track, it’s obvious that this is a new chapter for Foals, emerging from the gloominess of current years and expressing their freedom through euphoric dance-rock. Although now tinged with disco in 2001, packed with synth in Under The Radar and overall much poppier than we would expect, it is still overflowing with the band’s signature punchy hooks and soaring choruses.

An intensely summery, optimistic return for Foals, encouraging listeners to grab hold of life and keep dancing through festival season and beyond.

words ANNIE BISHOP

KEEP READING: ‘After much anticipation and two venue changes, Californian indie group TV Girl made their Welsh debut to a sold-out Tramshed.’
