Very slim premise for a comedy. One teacher challenges another teacher to a fight after school. Ice Cube vs Charlie Day. Obviously weak Charlie Day has little chance against the NWA rapper. Supposedly a mix between High Noon and a John Hughes film, this is neither. It’s an often amusing, foul mouthed vehicle for Cube to be all aggressive, Horrible Boss’ Charlie Day to be mostly angsty and then find his ‘manhood’ and various supporting characters to steal the show – particularly Tracy Morgan’s PE teacher and Jillian Bell’s meth taking guidance counsellor. Christina Hendricks adds some class to the classroom antics, but like most modern Hollywood comedies this has a lot of occasionally funny riffing on the script but often not so funny stuff too – Ice Cube saying “F*** the Police” in a blatantly obvious lazy nod to his past being an example. High on concept, muzzy in execution, Fist Fight is often funny but with no hilarious knockout blow.
