EVERYONE VERSUS RACISM: A LETTER TO MY CHILDREN | BOOK REVIEW
Patrick Hutchinson (Harper Collins)
One of the defining photographs of 2020 will surely be the one taken of 50-year-old father and grandfather Patrick Hutchinson, at a Black Lives Matter demonstration in June. Hutchinson attended the BLM demo with friends to help ensure that any violence that flared up against BLM demonstrators from English Defence League counterprotesters could be quickly defused. The photo of Hutchinson carrying a white counterprotester away from danger has been discussed and seen all over the world.
“I’m often asked why we felt the need to go and save this white man after all that he stood for in coming to disrupt a peaceful protest. The truth is, living with the image of a man being beaten to death is not something I could ever stomach… regardless of colour,” writes Hutchinson.
Everyone Versus Racism is a letter that athletics coach Hutchinson has written for his descendants: both an autobiography and a rallying cry for positive change, amounting to a poignant read. “I just want equality, equality for all of us. At the moment, the scales are unfairly balanced and I just want things to be fair for my children, my grandchildren and future generations.”
