The charisma, the raw sound and extraordinary talent of Eurekas made us look! In conversation with Ewa Pałka, band members Jack Perrett and Dan Burridge unravel their new song and plans for the future.
You have a new song, Made You Look, coming out this month.
Dan Burridge (guitar/vocals): Yes! It was written about four or five years ago now. The song title came about when I was getting some photos taken in Newport and saw the ‘Made You Look’ graffiti on a wall there. So, the title kind of fell into place and then I wrote the song.
The song has a very unique sound.
Jack Perrett (guitar/vocals): It seems like it’s one of the most original things we’ve got; other songs, I think you could say it sounds like this or that, but I’m not sure where this one came from! We could say, oh it’s a homage to this band – but, actually, no.
Dan: I suppose because it was written on an acoustic guitar, like a lot of our other songs, it’s a fun one to play live, and it always seems to get a pretty good reaction. I was playing around with those chords and came up with a nice riff that matched them.
The actual lyrical content of the song is kind of about oversharing on social media and the way that everything we put on social media needs to be documented. The repeat has a couple of references to what was going on at the time, but basically, the ethos of this band is that we’re quite political in terms of our lyrical content. So, the song touches upon themes like Brexit, better times, and a reference to a people’s vote.
We’ve already had some radio play for the song – on BBC Radio Wales, and it’s already had quite a few spins on Amazing Radio and some independent shows, so it seems to be catching on nicely in the places where we want it to.
It must be exhilarating to hear your song on the radio.
Dan: It’s exciting to have that kind of support even before the song is officially released, and it was cool to listen to it on Amazing Radio in the car. It’s always better when someone else plays it! Yeah, I think it’s the first real radio success for us – Jack [Perrett] has had it with previous projects, but it’s a first for the band. It’s a great experience for the whole band – Morgan Webb, who’s the drummer, and Richard Flores, who’s on bass – they’ve worked hard as well towards the releases.
Radio success, release date coming soon – any gigs to accompany the single?
Jack: We’re playing a gig at Tiny Rebel in Cardiff on 12th May, with Newport’s The Rogues and The Chartists. We have been invited to support Reverend & The Makers in Bristol in June, which is probably the biggest deal we’ve had so far. We’re playing at The Weekend Rumble – an amazing festival! – and Rebel Fest in Newport as well. We’ve got quite a few dates on the calendar to support the release.
Dan: This project has been in the making for nearly two years, and we’ve deliberately taken our time, not rushing into anything. We’ve been quite methodical in getting all the pieces of the puzzle in place. It’s nice to see it all coming together, and it’s satisfying.
What does the future hold for Eurekas?
Jack: The plan is to release singles this year and then maybe a six-pack early in 2024. We’re alternating between the songs we’ve written individually or together.
Dan: Jack and I usually sing the songs we’ve individually written.
Jack: It’s great to have that versatility and be able to rely on each other to contribute to the material.
As a solo artist, it’s not just about writing songs, but also planning, artwork, and contact with venues. It’s nice to have someone else to help with all of that.
