ESTRONS | LIVE REVIEW
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, Fri 11 Nov
If ever there was a band that could blow up the new music scene, it’s the explosive Cardiff-based Estrons, who punched everyone in the face with a fierce set at Clwb Ifor Bach on Friday night. Defining themselves as four misfits brought together by music, their on-stage chemistry certainly reflected a deep-rooted passion for their craft as vocalist Tali Källström flung herself around energetically throughout, giving voice to the band’s trademark punchy indie-rock sound.
Smashing through their latest EP, the sassy I’m Not Your Girl went down a treat with the crowd, chanting along with the attitude-packed chorus in a fever fit for the lyrics, before the supercharged Make A Man sent everyone wild with its bold message of objectifying a man who the protagonist has little respect for. It’s clear from early on in the night that this is a band that know how to work a room, with an unparalleled energy and a sound so huge that it makes you feel like you’re a world away from the relatively small confines of Clwb Ifor’s top floor.
Drop seemed to be a firm favourite, kicking the crowd awake with the powerful combination of engaging riffs and an impressive melody, which had everyone in the room bouncing around to their heart’s content – to be continued with Belfast and Call You Mine, which caused a suitable sweaty frenzy. Källström is really something else as a frontwoman, a force all of her own, jumping about while belting out politically-charged lyrics – all the while adding a completely unique vibe with her impressively angsty vocals.
Packed from start to finish with a constant stream of killer tracks, the four-piece may only have played a 45-minute set, but they definitely left everyone present wanting a whole lot more – and I have no doubt that’s exactly what’s on the horizon. Fearless, thought-provoking and completely different, Estrons are no misfits when it comes to in-your-face indie rock, they seem right at home.
