TEN, Cardiff
Until Sat 28 Apr
Welsh artist, Elfyn Lewis, will be displaying his newest work at TEN, a gallery based in a Roath house and open on an appointment-only basis. Renowned for his stunning abstract paintings, Llanw is a collection of vivid landscape abstract paintings, covered in different layers, brush techniques and bold colours, revealing every step of Lewis’ imagination and skill. His artwork has the ability to captivate, taking the viewer on a journey of enlightenment and philosophy. Everyone is constantly looking for something beautiful – it is almost human nature to relate to Lewis’ paintings as they are so often brimming with beauty and grace. Lewis won the gold medal in the fine art category at the National Eisteddfod in 2009, and he went on to win the Welsh Artist Of The Year prize a year later for his acrylic painting, Pwll Crochan, which was picked out by his son. Pwll Crochan juxtaposed imposing features and unique techniques. Throughout his success he has stayed true to himself, creating distinct and striking pieces of art.
As an artist, Lewis experiments with his abstract style of work, changing his method with each painting. By experimenting with different colours and tools, Lewis is able to make each piece distinctive, with a dynamic range and personality. His work is also deeply connected to his background; growing up as a native Welsh speaker in Porthmadog, Lewis’ work is connected to many memories, with Welsh titles common, demonstrating the main focal point of his work. Y Ddaear A Thu Hwnt (The Earth and Beyond) depicts the emotional tremors he felt whilst incorporating earthly colours to intensify natural characteristics.
Last summer Lewis had an exhibition at Cardiff’s Oriel Canfas gallery, featuring his Brynhyfryd (Summer Hill) collection: bold tones and dramatic brush strokes, orchestrating an organic landscape of mountains and geometric scenery. If you haven’t yet heard or seen Elfyn Lewis’ artwork, then make sure you book yourself in to step into his visual world – you won’t be disappointed.
