DOMI & JD BECK
Not Tight (Apeshit/Blue Note)
Much like the curveball of Air, the recent album by enigmatic UK soul unit Sault, the orchestral intro to DOMi & JD Beck’s debut full-length album Not Tight is a bit of an outlier for their usual genre. Apeshit is Anderson .Paak’s new label, and with DOMi Louna on MIDI keys and JD Beck on percussion, they whip up a host of jazzy joints for their rap star boss – some of which are more appreciable by the technicians than the average listener.
The best tunes on Not Tight feature guest artists, with Thundercat’s dextrous bass, sense of humour and vocals gracing Bowling. Herbie Hancock and vocoder brings his chops to Moon, channelling his 70s jazz-funk peak; Take A Chance features Anderson himself on a bit of abstract boom-bap and Pilot is a nice slowjam which adds Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes to the mix.
