The ever innovative Dirty Protest theatre company has teamed up with The Wales International Visual Arts Prize Artes Mundi to bring together an evening of theatre and visual art across seven short plays.
For the production, both emerging and established Welsh writers were assigned an artist entered in this year’s Artes Mundi prize to draw inspiration from. Using anything from their artist’s exhibition to inspire their creative juices, writers Katherine Chandler, Meredydd Barker, Andy Evans, Tom Wentworth, Lotty Talbutt, Heledd Wyn, and Michael Waters were all involved with the challenge of writing a short play within just a few short weeks.
Katherine Chandler, who is currently working on a script with the BBC, said: “my artist is Miriam Backstrom. When I saw her work I saw people, mirrors, glass, and Blondie’s Heart Of Glass in my head.”
Matthew Bulgo, one of the directors of the plays, also said: “This is a great chance for the writers to be inspired by art and be challenged to write something different.”
The completed plays will be performed at the Cardiff Museum as a special lunchtime show before a complete evening performance in the cinema room of Porters Bar, Cardiff, at both 7.30pm and 9pm. Tickets are available to buy in advance by emailing [email protected] or on the door.
