Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen
Until Sat 30 July
Grounded in the soil, air and sea of North Pembrokeshire, Dail Behennah’s latest exhibition, Fieldwork, has been inspired by leaving her house on the North Pembrokeshire coast. Stirred by the emotions of leaving the house where she has grown, loved and lived, her new exhibition has become an elegy to the imposing and wild beauty of the coast that has stolen her heart.
Starting her artistic exploration as a basket-maker, Dail has experimented with different mediums and had great success with manipulating willow, wire and objects she found in nature and daily life to create poetry which expresses the interesting and diverse nature of her local environment.
The exhibition uses delicate feathers, sharp thistles, polished stones and shells, and imprinted wood. Earthy and tonal textures are contrasted against a white background; all the pieces are interlinked and an interactive story.
Ceibwr is a piece inspired by the cliffs in Pembrokeshire of the same name. The white willow pins replicate the intricate folds of the hills. Two walks, surveyed, is a piece consisting of two chains, inspired by Gunter’s chain, a 17th century invention used for surveying. They correspond to walks in Pembrokeshire and contain objects that were collected on the walk.
The exhibition is a document of a geographical, emotional and metaphorical journey that spans space and time. It creates a truly immersive and transporting experience.
