CLUTCH
Sunrise On Slaughter Beach (Weathermaker Music)
Few bands can boast a near faultless back catalogue, but Maryland’s Clutch are one. Having emerged from the alt-rock/hardcore scene in 1991, they’ve plotted a course through the music business, which few have been able to follow – or had the nerve. They’ve stuck to their groove-inspired rock, tweaking their sound just marginally every time, giving them an almost timeless quality.
New album Sunrise On Slaughter Beach is a natural continuation of this trend, with rockers from start to finish, veering from Thin Lizzy-inspired riffing to jarring Bad Brains chaos with frightening ease. Neil Fallon, one of modern rock’s great lyricists, spits stories and anecdotes that draw you into the song; the powerhouse rhythm section of Dan Maines and Jean Paul Gaster lock in the groove while Tim Sult takes you on a sonic journey with some epic guitar work. Sunrise On Slaughter Beach is more of Clutch doing what they do and it’s perfect.
