CHARLIE’S ANGELS
***
Dir: Elizabeth Banks (12A, 120 mins)
Another reboot for the female fighting agents made famous by the 1970s TV series. Already spawning two messy feature films with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, this latest version has Elizabeth Banks at the helm both as writer/director and starring as Bosley. Grabbing their angel wings are Kristen Stewart as Sabina Wilson the attitude-heavy tough girl, Ella Balinska as Jane Kano the ex-MI6 agent with a serious skillset and Naomi Scott as Elena Houghlin the tech-sassy ingenue, all drawn into the world of Charles Townsend’s international security and investigative industry. The Angels have gone global, with multiple teams guided by multiple Bosleys throughout the world – franchise-baiting script work. Scott’s character is a scientist who is working on an alternative power technology which also could be weaponised. The Angels are on security duty which will obviously involve disguises, gadgets, horseriding, parachuting, fistfights and sassy one-liners. Patrick Stewart provides jovial class as another Bosley whilst Kristen Stewart lightens up her onscreen persona in a frothy, lightweight but fun action film.
