The power of words are showcased in this poignant novel from bestselling author Celeste Ng. At its start, we are introduced to Bird, a young boy who lives with his father after the disappearance of his mother, Margaret Miu. They live within the societal constrictions of PACT: an authoritarian way of living seemingly set up to protect American culture by prohibiting certain literature and allowing children of dissidents, particularly those of Asian origin, to be relocated within society.
Bird is in the dark about the reason for his mother’s departure but as small signs begin to allude to the influence she may have had with her published work, he sets out to try and find her, though without realising the danger to himself.
The author may be familiar to some from Little Fires Everywhere, which was transformed into a popular TV series. Dealing with similar themes of anti-Asian discrimination and injustice, Our Missing Hearts places greater emphasis on strong characters and human intervention to try and change the dynamics of society. It’s difficult not to get swept up within the folds of Bird’s journey in this impactful novel. Taking inspiration from folktales, the poetic prose captures the poignancy of the story which is both heartbreaking and hopeful.
