The biggest day in the Blaenavon calendar, World Heritage Day, is set to attract thousands of residents and visitors in celebration of the town’s 16th year of World Heritage status. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site at the turn of the century after the exceptional role it played in South Wales’ pre-eminence as the world’s major producer of iron and coal in the 19th century.
The event will feature live music and dancing, various craft stalls and shops, a miniature steam railway and a Victorian fun fair. As always, the highlight will be the Heritage Costume Parade which begins at 1:00pm, starting at the top of Broad Street before proceeding through the town. This year’s theme is Blaenavon Then and Now, which celebrates not only the town’s industrial past, but what makes the town unique today.
