Developed by Angel Matrix and published by Annapurna Interactive, Neon White is a fast-paced first-person shooter and puzzle platforming game. First released on Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch last year, it’s recently expanded to PlayStation 4 and 5, the former being the platform I played it on (although I might have preferred the original Switch version to enjoy the challenge on the go).
The game opens with some wonderful anime-like art and cut-scene conversations. These reveal that the titular character is one of several summoned from hell and offered a second chance to receive a place in heaven by eliminating demons who are trying to overrun the realm.
I’ll be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by Neon White, as it’s not something that would usually grab my attention. Boy, am I glad I got the opportunity to review it, though! Each level, you speedrun and parkour your way through, battling past enemies and bottomless pits. Scattered throughout each obstacle course are cards that offer special abilities or weapons, like a pistol or an extra jump to get you on your way. (Be prepared to restart levels, like, a lot. Unless you’re a perfectionist like me, sometimes you just miss jumps or don’t finish a level quickly enough.) Mix in some demon-slaying and altogether, there’s an irresistible urge to be the best you can and beat your previous time.
With over 90 levels to master, it gets increasingly more complex – with elements such as tripwires and bounce pads added in – making Neon White all the more absorbing as you race to the finish line. Once you’ve grasped the skills required, you’ll be zooming, bouncing and shooting your way to victory, feeling satisfaction quite like no other.
