American punk icons Green Day’s hit album American Idiot marked a comeback for the band in 2004, and the so-called rock opera spawned a musical based on the album. Its plot follows three friends looking for meaning in a post-9/11 world, featuring characters such as Whatsername and St Jimmy. The story was co-written by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, lyricist on the original album – whose anti-Bush sentiment will likely take on a new light in 2019’s Trumpian world.
First debuting in 2009, the show has received huge praise, winning two Tony Awards, a Grammy, and been successful enough to tour as far as Australia, as well as selling out a UK tour. In celebration of the musical’s 10th anniversary and the album’s 15th, American Idiot is hitting the road in 2019 for a massive 59-date tour across the UK. The cast will include Tim Milner and X-Factor finalist Luke Friend, whilst directing and choreography duties have gone to Racky Plews. Considering the past success this show has had, it’s unlikely this tour will fare any different.
