St David’s Day signals the first day of A Provincial Life’s 17-day stint at the newly refurbished Sherman Cymru Theatre in Cathays, Cardiff. Written and directed by one of Wales’ greatest theatrical talents, Peter Gill has returned to his hometown to put on his adaptation of Chekhov’s story.
Set in 1890s Russia, the story follows the struggle of a young man, exchanging his indulgent lifestyle for that of a worker, exploring how elevated ideals can soon deteriorate into feelings of frustration and hatred. Many of the themes in this lavish production, alongside the character’s search for equality, are echoed in the reality of modern day society, particularly in Wales, with Gill bringing a strong Welsh flavour to Chekov’s Russia.
First writing the story at the age of 25 for the Royal Court Theatre in London, A Provincial Life still hold as much relevance to Wales today as it did when it was first written. “In the mid-60s it was a very intriguing story; it suited the time very much, and that’s what’s interesting about doing it now,” explains Gill.
“It’s a very interesting class analysis and how things are perhaps harder than people think. It’s a difference between town and the country, and it’s a good story for Wales because of the whole provincial story; of being made to feel provincial.”
Working alongside Alison Chitty, the award-winning production designer, Chekov’s story is being recreated on a very grand scale. From costume to lighting, and the cast of established professionals and performers, the dramatic and poignant play is set to be a show-stopping performance that will have the audience gripped.
