Recent Cardiff University graduates Bethan Banks and Hannah Lipsey are doing quite well for themselves since finishing university. Bethan Banks has exhibited works in the Hans Brinker Painting Award in Amsterdam, as well as in the Wales Millennium Centre, whilst Hannah Lipsey has exhibited at the Bay Art gallery, as well as the Wales Millennium Centre. No soul destroying graduate or temping jobs needed for this talented pair then.
Coming together for their first joint exhibition, Reconstructions, Lipsey and Banks both found themselves inspired by very different ideas. Banks examines an extract from Virginia Woolf’s The Lady In The Looking-Glass: A Reflection, and recreates scenes where a mirror slices through the image; much like they do within the context of Woolf’s story. “The more a subject is observed, the more abstract it can appear,” explains Banks. “I am exploring and considering the metaphorical implications of introducing non illusionistic and reductive elements into my figurative work.” Lipsey instead looks to the world of architecture, examining the flatness of paintings of three-dimensional shapes. Lipsey’s pieces are designed to set the scene and create the tone of the images depicted in Banks’ work. When presented together, the works create a multi-dimensional and immersive artistic experience. Admission: free. Info: 07980 925449 / www.elysiumgallery.com (LM)
