Christmas comes early as The Royal Welsh Winter Fair gears up for its 28th consecutive year. Jake Andrews takes a look at what’s in store.
The Royal Welsh Showground takes centre stage once again as all things festive descend upon Wales in what has become a staple event for Christmas elves and food-lovers alike. The annual agricultural show presents the best in British livestock, as the country’s top showmen come from far and wide to compete for some of the top accolades the UK has to offer. Think of it like The Great British Bake Off but instead of iced fingers and sponge cakes, it’s farmyard animals.
Away from the judging ring, visitors can expect Yuletide treats from hundreds of stalls offering up a range of their own British produce and handmade gifts. Foodies are well catered for with a large dining hall serving an enticing menu of fresh homegrown foods guaranteed to warm the cockles on those cold winter days. Those looking to get a bit more hands-on can head over to the handicraft demonstrations, where they’ll be showing how to make your own Christmas gifts with a unique and personal touch. Alternatively, those of you who are looking to do something special with the most important (and stressful) meal of the year can take inspiration from one of the cookery demonstrations on offer.
Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without visit from the man himself and you can be sure that Santa Claus will be in attendance, taking a break from his busy schedule and opening a grotto for the two-day event perfect for any children who want to make last minute additions to their Christmas lists. The whole thing kicks off with a free fireworks display on Mon 26. So, if you’re looking for an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the build up to festive period this is the perfect event for you. Gates will be open from 8am.
