SUNSET SONS | LIVE REVIEW
Tramshed, Cardiff, Tue 1 Nov
On Tuesday night, indie-rock band Sunset Sons brought their surfer vibes to Cardiff’s Tramshed, headlining off the back of their debut album Very Rarely Say Die. Already making their mark in the music industry, there have been comparisons between lead singer Rory Williams and Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill, and from the beginning it’s clear to see why. With Williams’ cool stage presence and similar vocal twang, it is hard not to compare the two. But this isn’t just a tribute band. This is a group who bring charisma, edge, and their own individuality to the stage.
With their successful album released as recently as April of this year, fans had become a loyal chorus to the France-based, Anglo-Australian band, singing along to songs as if they had all been favourites for years. The venue had become a stadium for the night, with Sunset Sons performing a tight and confident set.
As the set continued it became clear there could be a little more light and shade throughout, as at times it felt like everything was moving at the same pace. This was brought in the encore, when Williams entered the stage alone to begin on the piano before the rest of the band joined to build the momentum back, producing that wave the night needed.
After this show, my introduction to the band, I’m already looking forward to watching Sunset Sons perform again. Although I predict this will be in a much bigger venue, with even more successful hits to chant along to.
