The Torch Theatre, Milford Haven
Mon 26 Sept
This production is based on the diaries of Tony Benn, one of Britain’s most well-known Labour politicians, and his reflections on life. The narrative begins with an old man, Tony Benn, sat alone with his collection of recording devices, containing footage from the most poignant parts of his life. The production focuses on his inner struggle of coming to terms with the end of his career, yet it remains comical and enjoyable throughout. This play portrays Benn recording his last tape to add to the extensive collection.
On a successful and critically acclaimed tour, this production is directed by Giles Croft and written by the praised Andy Barrett. This play was birthed by the Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, who have produced shows such as Garage Band, The League of Youth and the highly regarded touring narrative The Second Minute.
With the face of British politics undergoing radical changes in 2016, this solitary narrative is a thoughtful yet humorous insight into a long standing politician and the emotions that came throughout his career. A hugely interesting figure, Benn was previously branded as “The Most Dangerous Man in Britain” and represented the hard left of the Labour Party from the early 1980s, a period which divided the country in a way reminiscent to today. This work is a great opportunity to learn more about the man with a witty and poignant narrative.
