Having catered for private parties, weddings, corporate events and farmers’ markets since 2008, Llantwit Major-based Creperie De Sophie have finally established themselves in Cardiff with a charming flagship restaurant-cum-cafe in the historic High Street Arcade.
With limited seating available outside and only a small collection of bijou patio tables on offer in their cute cellar restaurant, demand for a table at Creperie De Sophie is already high at peak times reflectingof their rapid growth in popularity. Even when busy the service is always attentive and takeaway is always an available option for those with only a short amount of time to spare.
Once seated, you can choose from a wide selection of tempting sweet and savoury crepes, and whilst my domineering sweet tooth would normally dictate my decision, on this occasion, the depth of selection enticed me into trying one of the savoury galettes. Described as being “for those with a big appetite”, La Complète includes a beautifully runny free-range egg alongside cheddar cheese, apple wood-smoked ham, red onions and a rocket salad. The galette was perfectly cooked, and with its chunky ham and fresh rocket salad filling, it soon disappeared despite its ample size. We also sampled a Paysan (also plentiful in size) which was suitably packed with garlic mushrooms, cheddar cheese, red onions and a rocket salad.
The opportunity to mix and match will demand a return visit – not least at the insistence of my sweet tooth – and for its simple yet infinitely satisfying grub, La Creperie De Sophie is sure to only soar in popularity. GARETH LUDKIN
