Throwing their usual caution to the wind with genre-bending rhythms and foot-tapping tunes, the resident Fat City boys present the soulful stylings of Kezia Soul at Gwidihw’s intimate stage this Saturday. Having toured with the five-piece jazz and hip-hop-infused Genius Collective, the sultry vocal sounds of Kezia Johnson and her band finally takes centre stage. The Birmingham-based neo-soul singer delivers an extensive range that melds genre-bending cadences of funk, soul, reggae and jazz,, and If you enjoy a wealth of Jill Scott, Billie Holiday or Mary Wells, Kezia’s sweet harmonics will certainly be right up your street.
Known mostly for her vintage style and kick-ass cover of Amy Winehouse’s Stronger Than Me, Kezia and her band combine genres to prove that she meets Fat City’s eclectic needs. Her deep contralto vocals and jazzy Winehouse-esque I Like You stands in stark contrast to the off-beat, r’n’b synthesized groove of Galaxy. Jazzy throwback Paranoid spans a different dimension to the alternative track ‘On your mind’, performed with her brother to form The Twins. Not to mention that one listen to her vocals on My Love will leave you prickly-haired and jaw unhinged. This is one diva not to be missed.
