The return of March each year means more than just a step closer to summer in Wales. The 1st of the month means patriotism and partying. St. David’s Day is here, so get your daffodils (or leeks) out, button them to your jacket and get ready to celebrate your Welsh heritage.
As per tradition, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is combining with the National Chorus of Wales at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff to bring another spectacular concert and celebrate all things Welsh for St. David’s Day 2016.
The BBC National Chorus of Wales, which was formed in 1983, is one of the leading large mixed choruses in the UK.
To celebrate Dewi Sant this year they will be presenting one of the most important works in Welsh classical music, the story of Missa Cambrensis by Grace Williams, which will be narrated by Dr Rowan Williams.
The ensemble, which has only been performed once before, was composed and premiered in 1971. Williams’ setting of words from the Latin Mass and other sources, and includes readings of the Welsh Beatitudes.
BBC National Orchestra of Wales gave their debut first performance in April 1928 and occupy an extraordinary role as both a broadcast orchestra and the national symphony orchestra of Wales. The orchestra, based in Cardiff, is supported by the Arts Council of Wales.
If the National Orchestra of Wales and the Chorus of Wales weren’t enough, they’ll also be a stellar line-up of soloists performing on the night.
Previous concerts have been dubbed “powerful”, “life-affirming”, and “a labour of love”.
The show, conducted by New Zealand born Tecwyn Evans, is the perfect way to round off your day of festivities, and continues to highlight the breadth and riches of talent in this small land.
The hugely popular event at St David’s Hall is set to start at 7:30pm and tickets are still available, priced between ÂŁ15-35.
