Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Trump makes his first visit to Wales as leader of the free world. When satirist Simon Jay first created Trumpageddon, Trump was a mere candidate out of his depth, now he’s pulling out of climate change pacts and dragging America back into the Stone Age… at least he’s still funny to look at.
This satirical piece portrays Trump as a hysterical, demented and disturbed version of himself; with Jay having watched every piece of footage he could find on the president in order to understand him, he embodies the tangoed tyrant, and creates a part sketch, part improv for our enjoyment. Much of what Jay/Trump says within the show has already been said by Trump (such as Hillary Clinton being the devil), reminding the audience of how unbelievable this character is, a slightly bitterer reminder now that he is actually President of the United States. However, Jay also allows the audience to get involved, hosting an improvised press conference, in which the audience are allowed to question ‘Trump’ on his motives and future plans. To conclude the performance, Trump asks the voters to raise their hands if they will vote for him; creator Jay says he’s unsurprisingly yet to sway anyone in Trumps favour.
