Dir: Ridley Scott (15, 120 mins)
Could this be the film that makes the alien scary again, or at least a more satisfying sequel for the acid-blooded xenomorph? After the intriguing but ultimately disappointing Prometheus, an emboldened Ridley Scott continues the franchise directing his third Alien film. The good ship Covenant is on its way to a remote planet in a bid to start a new colony. Their destination seems to be an uncharted if eerie paradise, then they discover a ship, like others in films before them and soon they are fighting for their lives. Heading up the merry band of fodder are Katherine Waterston in a Ripley-esque role, Michael Fassbender who returns as an upgraded synthetic and Danny McBride, James Franco, Carmen Ejogo and Billy Crudup are among the others who are about to have a very bad back-bursting experience. Hopefully, with Scott back in charge of a full blooded Alien film, this will make up for the flaws of Prometheus whilst expanding the universe. Promising some pant-wetting sequences, a classy, diverse cast and top-drawer special effects, this should be a return to form for a franchise that is nearly 40 years old.
