Dir: Taika Waititi (12A, 120 mins)
After the underwhelming Thor: The Dark World, the third solo adventure for the Norse god Avenger needed to be something different. The choice of Taika Waititi for director seems to be inspired, his background in comedy with the excellent What We Do In the Shadows and The Hunt of the Wilderpeople certainly gives the hammer wielding heroics of Chris Hemsworth a new vibe. Not that he has his hammer for long, stolen as it is by Cate Blanchett’s evil Hela, who wants to bring about Ragnarok, the end of all things. Shorn also of his locks, Thor becomes imprisoned on another planet and thrown into a gladiatorial arena pitting him against the Hulk. Can he win back ‘friends from work’ and assemble the likes of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Idris Elba’s Heimdall to save the day? It looks like it will be irreverent fun finding out. Taking a page from the Guardians of the Galaxy book, this Thor is aiming for laughs amidst the CGI, especially between Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and the thunder god. A slew of cameos from the likes of Dr Strange himself Benedict Cumberbatch, Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and of course Stan Lee will add to the glee, making this Thor’s most enjoyable outing to date. By Odin’s beard!
