Theatre Critics Of Wales Awards Hits Cardiff
words: AMBER BELL
Sherman Cymru will host Wales’ very first Theatre Critics of Wales Awards on Sat 26 Jan; an evening dedicated to the country’s achievements over the past year in opera, dance and drama. Hosted by broadcaster Nicola Heywood Thomas, the awards will recognise some of the fantastic talents of Wales, with awards dedicated to Young Performers, Welsh and English speaking individual performers, directors, designers and ensemble casts amongst many more.
The awards are the brain-child of the Young Critics Scheme, a group of 12-25 year olds who take their love of the stage and apply it to performance reviews which are then published online. Accompanied by professional theatre critics, they will select the winners of the prestigious awards from a shortlist, announced on Saturday night. They will also announce a special award, presented on the night to an unsuspecting participant of the awards.
The awards hope to celebrate the brilliant performances that have graced the stages of Wales, recognising not only Welsh national companies but also smaller arts organisations. The evening is sponsored by Wales’ leading arts and media organisations, a demonstration of their commitment to the arts in Wales.
