The music hits you square in the chest and takes hold of your senses in a way that listening to the CD just can’t live up to; the lyrics mean more because you can {see} what they mean to the band; each gig is a whole new experience because just about anything can happen.
Eleven home-grown singers and musicians have built themselves a reputation as a band that delivers electric live performances in the style of the big ol’ soul bands of days gone by. A guitar-wailing, sumptuous bass-delivering, rock-steady rhythm section sits alongside a rootin tootin collection of ‘hit-you-in-the-face’ horns (complete with dance routines), all of which is lead by an eclectic mix of vocalists, each with a voice that’s deliciously distinct from the next. And this, my friends, is what makes up The Big What?! Band.
The Big What?! started life as the brain child of front man, Simon ‘One Take’ Riordan who dreamt up the band back when he was singing along to {The Blues Brothers} and {The Commitments} as a kid. The band’s grounding in old-fashioned soul and rhythm and blues is evident, as are the influences of modern day rock and pop. Keep an ear out for the small but very noticeable crowd-pleasing injection of a well known nineties pop number in the middle of Son Of A Preacher Man.
From Soul Man to Feelin Good, every song builds on the last until every single person is dancing, singing and generally getting up to get down. If you thought you were a wall flower before, you can think again because you’ll be up and dancing by the end of the gig. It’s inevitable, really.
